Tracking IT
Tracking new words.
This unit gives you methods of tracking vocabulary change with the aid of a computer and presenting that information in the way used by lexicographers. It will give you some experience of the kind of work that goes into making a dictionary entry and the problems involved in that work. These methods can be used to track any type of new word and can also be adapted for phrases and other 'text string' patterns of words and letters in combination.
This unit will be more meaningful if you have access to a computer, and some reference CD-ROMs or Internet sites such as newspapers and an electronic version of the Oxford English Dictionary. Spend some time familiarising yourself with the structure of a short dictionary entry from the latter.
