There is accessible guidance on researching and writing up language investigation projects in:

• A. Wray, K. Trott, A. Bloomer with S. Reay and C. Butler (1998) Projects in Linguistics: A practical guide to researching language; London: Arnold.

The latter includes introductions to statistics and corpus-based study and a section on the data protection implications of computer records. There are a number of computer-based methods for investigating language including those made possible by Wordsmith Tools. Electronic text makes it possible to assemble a corpus for analysis although there are ethical and legal constraints to be aware of.
